The DADvocate Cigar Review – Padron 1964 Anniversary Series No 653274

by admin on January 14, 2012

It was a beautiful night here in Ga to continue The DADvocate Cigar Review.

If you remember last week I smoked the Alec Bradley Prensado and really enjoyed Cigar Aficionado’s cigar of the year for 2011. Tonight while beautiful was quite cold and I thought about forgoing the cigar, but it’s been a long week with little sleep, lots of work, and my wife has been sick all week to top it off and I needed a little vacation so I decided to pick up a cigar I had smoked before and remember really enjoying. It also happens to be #5 on Cigar Aficionado’s top 25 list of 2011.

Tonight’s cigar did exactly what I needed it to do. It took me away to a warm island and let me escape the difficult week I was having. The fact that it was an excellent cigar didn’t hurt much either.

The Padron 1964 is a beautiful cigar that burns extremely well. The Padron’s have a vertical integrated cigar process which basically means they own the farms, grow the plants, select and sort the tobacco, ferment the tobacco, and own and manage the factories where the tobacco is rolled into cigars. The Padron 1964 is all Nicaragua grown and comes from the Jalapa, Condega and Estelí regions. According to Cigar Aficionado it is all grown in open sunlight and there really are some wonderful pictures on the Padron website.

When I first lit the cigar the aroma was a wonderful reminder of the first Padron I smoked on my Mexican vacation last March and the memory warmed me up immediately in the sub 30 degree weather. The scent of the smoke is a sweet wood and leather. It’s also very soft which gives the cigar that relaxing feel. This is another box pressed cigar and it is very tight but despite the tight wrap it draws very well.

As I mentioned earlier the cigar burns extremely well and the ash grew to almost 3 inches before falling off. That was a bit more than half the stick. The flavors in this cigar were pleasantly mild blended well and consisted of ceder leather and a hint of spice. I’ve read reviews talking about cigars having a creamy finish and until smoking this Cigar I didn’t understand what that meant. This cigar has a beautiful creamy finish and would likely go extremely well with a Guinness. Another interesting thing I picked up on was a slight hint of horse-radish on the back of the tong. I don’t mean the spice of horse-radish but the sweetness that you get, and it was really a pleasant flavor.

I’m still getting this rating thing down and while I’ve smoked a few cigars I realize I haven’t smoked enough to fairly rank all the cigars I smoke. I really enjoyed this cigar and will be smoking it again. I’m going to rank it a 96 and I’m going to re-rank the Prensado to a 95 as I believe I enjoyed this cigar better than the Prensado.

Next week I’ll be reviewing a Cigar that is one of my favorite brands a CAO. The cigar is a CRIOLLO which I haven’t previously smoked.
